Assignment #1 (research)

Andre Kertes

He was born on July 2, 1894 in Budapest, Austria-Hungary. He is known for photographing scenes that bring out emotional states of mind. During his lifetime, he has worked for some magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and House & Garden. Most of his pictures are in black and white, though some of them present warm colours such as beige and brown. Many of his photographs have natural lines such as laundry lines, streets, trees, etc. The style of photography varies greatly between the photos, but it is noticeable that many of the images are taken from a top view and that nothing is ever centred; in fact, most of his works follow the rule of thirds. Kertes’s goal was to photograph objects from a fresh point of view (angle) so that the objects could be reinvented under the eyes of the spectator.

Vivian Maier

Maier had a fixation with photography. She was very passionate about photographing daily life in the city; in fact, most of her pictures are taken in the city. Most of Maier’s photos are black and white, but later in her career, she started taking many coloured photos, which is probably due to the recent invention of coloured photos. Also, the big majority of her works contain strangers. Almost every photo has at least one stranger in it. There is a great variation in the statuses of the people in the pictures, the range spreads from beggars to rich public figures. Most of the images of streets have a large depth of field. It is also noticeable that a majority of the pictures were taken during the day so she had to use a small aperture most of the time.
